My seven year old, Q is a budding artist. He has a lot of talent. He is creative and enjoys being expressive. His watercolor of a pterodactyl was chosen to be displayed at a local gallery for Youth Art Month. What makes Q an artist, however, is his perspective on life.
Just today I was waiting for Q after school. From where I park, I can see him coming from a little bit of a distance. With the number of kids walking through the school yard, it can be hard to tell which kid is Q. Most days, I can figure out which child is mine by watching the way he walks. It's not the same from day to day... but it's different than what everyone else is doing. Some days Q is jumping off rocks or playground equipment. Some days he is walking so slowly, as his attention is focused on whatever new form of ice a frozen puddle has taken on. Some days he is so busy watching all the other kids, he forgets that I am waiting for him a few yards away. He rarely walks in a straight line or at a steady pace. Today, he was running his very fastest (which is pretty fast for a kid his age). From the time I could see him until he reached the car, he didn't slow down. The worried mother in me wondered if he was scared. When he got into the car, I said, "Wow, you were running fast." Q said, "Yeah, I was singing the Transformers song in my head, and that makes me run fast."
Q loves movies with fighting and typical testosterone kind of entertainment, but he also loves musicals and movies with dancing. He watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers five times in three days and knows every word to all the High School Musical songs. He thinks Gene Kelly is awesome and he thinks Spiderman kicks serious butt. He loves to move and loves movement - he gets so excited! Q doesn't watch t.v., he engages in whatever imaginary story is happening. He becomes part of the action.
Q is also one of the most kind people I know. He has a genuine respect for other people, young and old. He is a great friend and a truly genuine.
Q is at school most days, so I don't get to spend a lot of time with him. I sometimes forget how amazing he is, until he reminds me in his own way. I'm really proud to be Q's Mom, but I'm also just really, really glad to know him.
